I have a lot of cake pans, but I don't have any shaped as a star. Strange, I know... But do you think that stopped me from making a star shaped cake? Well, I could have bought a star pan, but this way is a) cheaper, b) much more fun and c) you get cake scraps.
Start with 2 cakes (mine were apple & cinnamon), one slightly bigger than the other.
Get the bigger one and divide it in 6 huge slices.
Cut the 6 slices with a serrated knife.
Again with the serrated knife, cut the rounded edge of each cake piece, making perfect triangles.
Cut the 5 ronded edges of the cake.

Que belleza de torta y que creatividad! Me encanta!
Saludos
Perfection! How adorable and creative
genius!
oh my gosh how CREATIVE!

Hehe, very creative! Now I don't have any excuse to avoid making star shaped cakes :-p
Good work on the geometry! I'm sure you get a better rise on your cake with this method, too since corners do seem to limit a cake from soaring to all heights.
I, too, have a lot of pans and no star either.

I am am too lazy and would have bought the star pan!
What an adorable cake!!!!
That is so pretty, I would be afraid of crumbling the whole cake!
That's pretty darn cool actually. If you're gonna bake a cake I don't see why you wouldn't play around with the shape if it could come out this good, very cool!
A most beautiful way to usher in spring (or coax it into arriving, anyway).
Wow, so percise and pretty, you r a real star ;)
You need the most creative blog award - right there with Bakerella.
Your cake looks so pretty.....my babygirl would go gaga over it. As a matter of fact I know several that would LOVE it.
I'm hopping over to see what else you've been up to.

That is the cutest cake ever!! It really does SHINE!
Love it! I'm always interested in ways to make cool-shaped cakes, because most of my cake pans are pretty standard. Thanks for sharing!
That's just so cleaver! And the fact that's it's not a "perfect" star shape give's it more charm, I love it!! And I bet it was yum-e!!
That's so pretty :-)
Wow, what a cool transformation!! That cinnamon apple cake sounds delicious.
Awww thats sooo cuutttee! and mmmmmmm apple and cinnamon yummm!!
how cute are those?!?! i love it!
All you have to do is decorate it? OMG woman that is dang beautiful..unreal.
I'm all about the cake scraps, baby! Clever girl. This cake is a stunner!
YES to cake scraps & yes to a wonderful cake baker like you. You are a STAR!!
Gorgeous! Love the tutorial, you have awesome visual-spatial skills :), I never would've figured that out!

Wow ! Sei veramente super fantastica !!!! I'll go and check all of your cakes !!
It looks perfect!!! Love the colours.
I can't believe I've never thought about making a star cake like this before! Genuius idea.
Lovely! You're so talented. I could never make a cake look so perfect. It looks tasty, too. Mmmm, dulce de leche. :)
¡¡¡ Bizcobolas a cascoporro !!!
Tienes unas tartas super simpáticas, me encantan.
¡Ah! Y gracias por el enlace. (k)
Wonderful ideia!
Wow. You are amazingly talented. You should enter this into some type of contest!
Gorgeous! I love the fondant.
WOw, thanks for that tip! By the way your cake looks gorgeous!
You decorated that? Seriously? Omg, I am so bowing before you right now. Wow.
Awesome, perfect star....looks lovely !
Beautiful.
Never thought of using 5 triangles from a six cut.
I posted it to blog and copied one of your photos...if you object I'll remove it.
Wow - that is amazing!!! Gorgeous cake!
LOVE it! My cutting skills are not good enough to do that! And the decorating--never! Awesome star! You could make me a cookie star! ;)
Just looked at all your cakes on Flickr. I think you should be on one of those Food Network cake Challenges. Go Rita, Go Rita!
Quite the talent!
What a cute cake! And you're right--cake scraps are the best part of making cakes!
Ana
How creative and cute! It look perfect!
this is very clever, especially because if you *did* have a star shaped pan it would be very difficult to get the cake out without breaking off a cake arm!! (well for me at least) and also you'll know the cake will be evenly baked; no dry, crusty arms with a wet, soggy belly :P
You're a star Rita!
Now the real test. Can you make me a Z-shaped cake for my birthay next month? ha! ;-)
Wow! That star cake is beautiful!
you're one smart cookie! so innovative!
You always so clever with this kind of thing!
The end result looks stunning!
that is so clever! thanks for sharing!
This cake is cuuuute :-)! And, of course, a selfmade star is way cooler than one from a bought form :-)!
Wow! You are amazing!
Ok, now do a dodecahedron... just kidding!
I love the way you decorated it, so wonderful.
Oh wow, you are absolutely brilliant and what a fantastic looking cake as well. Great job!
Just found your blog - love it!! Everything is so beautiful.
My daughter would go crazy for this cake. It is absolutely darling!
Very clever idea and the resulting cake is beautiful. My mother used to have a book of "cutouts" and how to make ordinary cake pan cakes into fun shapes. I'd be a little afraid to try this. I'm not so steady with a knife. :-O
What a beautiful cake! I would never have thought of doing that to get a star...great job!
Thank you for idea, are amazing, I make cake and is very good idea for me
A kiss for you
What a great idea. I think I will have to look at obstacles in a new way now when looking for cake pans.
HOLY COW! This is super special. Truly amazing!
What a brilliant idea! I love it!
Come by my blog, I have awards for you.
That's a great looking cake! Can you make a series out of this, how to make different cakes shapes from regular cake pans? :)
That is the greatest cake ever!
Where did the scraps go? :)
Come visit me at www.aduckinherpond.com.
great technique! I have nominated you for the lemonade award! come by my blog to claim your award.
Wow! Very impressive!
What an amazing cake!
How pretty! Love it.
That is such a gorgeous cake. I can't wait for my fondant class. Love your blog.
Hi, Great Idea. Could you please let me know what size cakes you used
Hi Anonymous, the cake pans I've used for this cakes were, if I recall, one with 20 cm and the other with 25 cm. Hope this helps.
I baked a star shaped cake for my daughter's 2nd b'day! It turned out quite well. Not as good as yours though :)

This is such a great idea. I was online looking for an idea for a rock-themed party. I'm going to make a "you're a rock star" cake for my daughter... and save some money... thanks to you!
Just made this cake for my son's birthday! Thanks for the tips!
Nina
Just made a star cake for my son's birthday. Thanks for the directions!
Nina
Thanks for sharing. I'm going to give this a go for my son's upcoming 4th birthday.
Now for my completely silly question - what do you mean by "fill it" in the sentence "Now all you have to do is to fill it (I've used dulce de leche) and decorate it as you like".
Good luck with the cake, hope it turns out well! Fill it, means puting a filling in the midle of the cake ;)
What a great and simple way to make a star-shaped cake! I made one today and it was so pretty, all dressed in chocolate ganache:) Thank you so much for sharing your talent!
I'm thinking of attempting this weekend for my (will be) 3 year old. Wish me luck!
Good luck Danya!!!
How did you get the pentagon shape on the smaller cake? It says to,divide the cake into five equal parts. I don't get it!
You just have to eyeball the pentagon and make the 5 cuts to give it the shape. I think if you look at the picture it's easier to get it. Good luck ;)
How much does the cake weigh after all the carving? Approximately? And what are the size of each tin that you used? Appreciate your reply. Thanks much.
Samantha I can't honestly remember, I made this cake 6 years ago...
Thanks for the prompt reply. :)
so clever! and so beautifully decorated too! I have a star themed baby shower cake that i need to bake, and this seems so doable. I was just wondering how you managed to fill your cake though? Slicing through all the 6 different pieces couldnt have been easy. Thanks. SHilpa
Shilpa I did fill it :)
